away.
SILLYUM
Sillyum
was an important city of Pamphylia. There are remains from
Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Seljukid periods. The lower gate
belonging to Hellenistic period, to its left side the station and
the palace, a little higher up, a look-up tower and city walls
exists... After passing the entrance gate, at the southwest,
remains of two structers are observed. The larger one belongs to
the Byzantine period, and the other is Hellenistic origin... As
you continue, you ll meet the theater and the Odeion. Most
of the theater has slid down in a landslide. Among the remains on
the hill top there is also a Seljukid mosque. In the central and northeast
sectors of the plateau beware of grass covered cisterns.
ASPENDOS
Aspendos
was founded by the colonists from Argos under the reign of Mopsos.
On the coinage belonging to 5-4 th centuries BC the name of the
town is Estvedia. This is an evolution of the Hittite
King Asitawada who has been found to be mentioned in Hittite
tablets found in Karatepe, Adana. Aspendos
was the only city besides Side which issued silver coinage. The
town was a member of Athenian Naval Union. In the
Hellenistic period, Aspendos was a rich city like Side. The town
developed further in the Roman Imperial times. The remains of the structures
to be seen today date from the Roman times. the theater which is used even today, is in excellent shape. It can house 30
000 spectators. Stadium near the theater is one of the best kept
buildings of ancient city. Between the theater and the stadium
there is a footpath climbing up to the acropolis of the town.
